Do you love camping but feel a little cramped squashing into a tent. Do you like actually being able to stand up when getting into a change of clothing. If this is you then you should probably check out what’s available in the range of pop up campers.

You may get jealous when the person in the campsite pulls up with a fully fledged camper van but there are many reasons to choose a pop up camping trailer.

First up and most obvious is cost. Camper trailers are easier on the wallet and for people just starting out or for larger families who have to watch their budget they are a reasonable compromise.

Cost of fuel is also a consideration when deciding on a pop up camper trailer. Having extra weight on your vehicle decreases your mileage and increases your travel expenses. A camper trailer is light and will not add much to the cost of traveling.

With their canvas sides and the fact that they fold down into a small form factor they are incredibly light. Most larger cars or SUV’s will have no problem towing a pop up camper trailer. Because of their lower towing profile the driver is able to use the standard rear view mirrors as the view behindis unobstructed by the trailer.

A big drawback of a full camper van is their size. You need quite a large space to put to store it when you aren’t camping. A pop up camper van will happily fit into your standard size garage. And no need to mention the ease of actually getting it in there as opposed to it’s full size cousin.

Pop up campers are much more comfortable than your average tent but they do have their downsides when you are comparing them to a camper van. For starters They have soft sides which don’t add anything to security over a tent.

If they do have bathroom amenities they are basic and only surrounded by a thin wall or curtain. So if you embarrass easily from bodily functions you might want to consider getting one without a bathroom and only stay at places with a toilet block and showers.

Mattresses that are supplied with the average pop up camper leave a lot to be desired in the comfort department. If you do invest in a pop up camper it might be wise to also invest in decent mattresses.

One other consideration is the weather. Being in a pop up camper during a storm can be a bit nerve wracking for the faint of heart. Even worse, the setup times of some pop up campers can you leave you a bit wet and disheveled if you happen to arrive at camp when the weather has turned a bit sour.

Despite all these shortcomings a pop up camper is a major step up from a tent. If you are used to tent camping then your trips will be a lot more comfortable and the shortcomings won’t be as evident because you’ll be used to them already. The do provide more protection from the weather than a tent and come with a lot of features that are built in. Most have gas stoves, auxiliary batteries, pre-packed kitchen area with all the cutlery and utensils you need. Generally it’s just a matter of packing your food, putting the trailer on the car and go.
